SILENCE - SOLITUDE - COMMUNITY

We are women dedicated to living the Gospel of Jesus as
faithfully as possible and who respond to the needs of the Church and the world by a
life of contemplative prayer and a total gift of self.
In 2006 the communities of Kirkintilloch and Langside joined together and were re-
founded as the new Glasgow Carmel, dedicated to Our Lady and St. Joseph.
We moved to our new site in Kirkintilloch in January 2008.
Silence and solitude are necessary for our contemplative prayer but Community
is just as essential to our way of life.
We also have times for work such as Altar Bread distribution, printing, caring for our
elderly sisters and the general upkeep of the Monastery.

OUR LADY in CARMEL
From the beginning Mary has been the inspiration and companion of Carmelites who
like her treasure God's word pondering it in their hearts. Standing at the foot of the
cross, silent witnesses to the compassionate love of God for all humanity.

OUR ROOTS AND OUR MISSION
Teresa of Jesus founded her first community in 1562, our roots, however, go back to
the 12th century hermits on Mount Carmel. St. Teresa had a clear and specific
mission in mind: to pray for the needs of the Church and the world.

In these days there is a new interest in meditation and mysticism. Carmelites
hope to offer to those feeling called to this kind of prayer the rich heritage which is
ours within the Christian Tradition.

With this in mind, the sisters welcome anyone who wants to join them at their
times of prayer - liturgical and silent - in their chapel, and we try to provide space
and assistance for those seeking a deeper life of prayer.

Carmelite sisters often have no way of judging the effects of their life on others, but
we trust that our life is bearing fruit for the Church and the world. We are not
exempt from the ups and downs of the human journey; always in need of conversion
and living in the darkness of faith. Yet as each one of us enters into her own heart in
search of God we believe that in that searching we bring with us the whole of
humanity in its quest for the fullness of life promised us by Christ. Our desire is that
our monastery can be a place of peace, prayer and healing.
