Carmel, Terre Haute. In the centre of the icon stands Mary in the pose of the Virgin of the Sign. See Isaiah 7:14 and Revelation 12:20. She bears Jesus enveloped in a mandorla, a symbol representing a window into heaven. He is shown as Christ Emmanuel, the child of the first coming, but is placed amid majestic signs of His glorious second coming. The open book proclaims Him as the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. The saints surrounding the central image are especially relevant in Carmelite history. Beginning at top left and continuing clockwise: The prophet Elijah, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, Saint Edith Stein, and St, Therese of Lisieux.
